Turgen soum was established in 1925 under the 5th resolution of the Presidium of the People’s Great Khural of the Mongolian People’s Republic, separating from the Togs Buyn-Uul khoshuu of Chandman Uul aimag and located on the Delgermörön plain under the name Bayankhairkhan soum. Initially, it had 9 administrative units, 603 households, a population of 2,600, and 97,800 head of livestock. It was renamed Turgen soum in 1931. In 1959, the soum center was relocated to a place called Khavtslyn Boom. Administratively, it consists of three units: Bayankhairkhan, Rashaant, and Erdene Khairkhan. Turgen soum has a total area of 225,342 hectares and five budgetary organizations. According to the statistical data at the end of 2024, it had 622 households, a population of 2,090, and 139,522 head of livestock. It is located 35 km from the aimag center and connected by 32 km of paved road, with approximately 18,000 hectares of forest resources. The residents of the soum primarily engage in livestock husbandry and agricultural production.
