Ulgii sum of Uvs province was established in 1959. Historically, it belonged to the Western Zorigt Van khoshuu of the Durvud Dalai Khan aimag. The sum consists of four baghs (subdivision): Chargat, Ulgiinuur, Khulstnuur, and Khudulmur, with a total of 627 households and 2,445 residents. The total land area of the sum is 234,053 hectares. By population, Ulgii sum ranks 14th out of the 19 sums in Uvs province, and by land area, it ranks 18th. Geographical Location Ulgii sum is located in the southwestern part of Uvs province, 1,531 km from Ulaanbaatar and 118 km from the provincial center. It borders Myangad and Durgun sums of Khovd province and Naranbulag, Zavkhan, and Umnugovi sums of Uvs province. Geographical Features The sum's landscape is unique, ranging from the deserts and steppe areas surrounding Khar-Us Lake to the vertical zonation of the Central Asian inland basin. It belongs to both the Gobi and steppe regions and sits at an altitude of 1,230 meters above sea level. The sum stretches longitudinally in the southern part of Uvs province. The highest point in the sum is Chargat Mountain, which rises to 2,299 meters above sea level. Regarding surface water resources, the sum has several lakes and streams, including Ulgii Khar-Us, Shine-Us lakes and Sondoult, Shivee, and Boom rivers. Climate Conditions Ulgii sum has an extreme continental climate, with cold winters and hot summers. - Winter temperatures range between -25°C to -32°C. - Summer temperatures reach +30°C to +35°C, with ground temperatures rising to +55°C to +62°C. - Annual precipitation is low, and the climate is hot and dry, resulting in limited vegetation growth. - The spring season is particularly windy, with wind speeds reaching 20-24 m/s. - There are about 35-40 days per year with wind speeds exceeding 10 m/s. Agriculture and Livestock The sum has 155,990 livestock, including: - 2,608 camels - 5,380 horses - 4,047 cattle - 58,875 sheep - 85,080 goats A total of 74,159 high-quality goats are being selectively bred. The sum has 627 households, of which: - 468 are herder families - 112 own livestock - 47 do not own livestock Crop Farming A total of 48.5 hectares are used for crop farming, with: - 80% dedicated to fodder crops - 20% dedicated to potatoes, vegetables, and fruits Our Pride Hero of the MPR (Mongolian People’s Republic), Begziin Givaan, was born in Ulgii sum in 1926. On July 8, 1948, he was one of 10 border guards who bravely fought against over 170 enemies invading the Mongolian border at Baitag Bogd. He sacrificed his life for his country at just 22 years old. In 1971, he was posthumously awarded the title “Hero of the MPR”, and his name remains in the history of the Mongolian armed forces. Our Brand On March 12, 2019, by decree A/60 of the Minister of Food, Agriculture, and Light Industry, the “Ulgii Red” breed of goat was officially recognized. The average weight of an Ulgii Red buck is 50-55 kg, and a doe weighs 40-45 kg. A fully grown buck produces 380-450g of cashmere, while a doe produces 350-400g. The cashmere fiber is 14-17 microns in diameter, 5-6 cm in length, and has a clean yield of around 45%. Natural Attractions Ulgii sum is home to numerous historical and natural landmarks, including: Dayaan Cave, Ugiinuur Monument, Rashaant Spring inscriptions, Three Snake Petroglyphs, Temeen Khonshoor, Bayangol Cliffs, Upper and Lower Sondoult Springs,Uguumur Inscriptions, Khovoot Mountain, Ulgii Red Hills Khukh Tolgoi. Additionally, there are medicinal springs known to heal internal organs. Due to its unique landscape and historical significance, the sum has great potential for ecotourism and cultural tourism. Wildlife The sum is home to various rare and common animal species, including: - Rare mammals: Argali (wild sheep), Ibex (wild goat), Saiga antelope, and Red deer. - Other mammals: Red fox, wolf, hare, corsac fox, marmot, Pallas’s cat, badger, hedgehog, sable, and stone marten. - Resident bird species: Pigeon, owl, shrike, sparrow, crow, hazel grouse, lark, and Mongolian finch. - Migratory birds: Ruddy shelduck, crane, swan, mallard, kite, vulture, swallow, and silver gull.
