Construction work has started on the cross-border railway connecting Mongolia's Gashuunsukhait and China's Gantsmod ports.

The Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod cross-border railway is a Class 1 railway featuring dual tracks with a 1520mm broad gauge and a 1435mm narrow gauge.

The main line length is 19.5 km, and it includes single and double-track bridge structures ranging from 8 to 31 meters in height. It will have a cargo capacity of 30 million tons per year for the broad gauge and 10 million tons per year for the narrow gauge.

The total estimated cost of the project is 902 billion MNT, and the funding is to be borne by "Erdenes Tavantolgoi" JSC, as decided by Parliamentary Resolution No. 68 of 2023. The Gashuunsukhait–Gantsmod border railway will provide a significant boost to Mongolia's coal export volume, transport logistics capacity, and economic growth.

The commencement of construction on this cross-border railway creates the conditions for connecting other Mongolian and Chinese border ports agreed upon in intergovernmental agreements, namely Shiveekhuren-Sekhee, Bichigt-Zuunkhatavch, and Khangi-Mandal, by railway. As a result, it is anticipated that coal export volume will increase from 83 million tons to 165 million tons, annual export revenue will increase by 1.5 billion USD, and it will make a significant contribution to Mongolia's GDP per capita reaching 10,000 USD. Calculations also show that transportation costs will decrease by 2–2.5 times, export capacity will increase by 30 million tons, and transport revenue will grow by 300 million USD. Furthermore, the project will create 200 permanent and 800 temporary jobs, serving as a tangible catalyst for regional development and employment.
