"Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025” Officially Opens

The World Expo “Osaka-Kansai EXPO 2025” officially opened on April 12, 2025 in Osaka, Japan. The Expo, which is held under the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” will continue to run for six months until October 13 of this year.

The official opening ceremony was attended by His Majesty Emperor Naruhito of Japan and the Empress, as well as Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who welcomed and greeted the guests.

This is the second time the World Expo is being held in Osaka, Japan. The iconic “Grand Ring Roof,” the symbol of the Expo, is recognized as the largest wooden structure in the world. Prime Minister Ishiba highlighted in his speech that this structure combines modern construction technology with Japan’s traditional “nuki” joinery, making it a strong and earthquake- and disaster-resistant structure.

The Expo is taking place in "Grand Ring" town on Yumeshima, an artificial island constructed on the waterfront of Osaka under the jurisdiction of Osaka Prefecture. A total of 158 countries and 9 international organizations are participating, showcasing and promoting their nations to the world.

Mongolia is participating through a collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Mongolian National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the “Chinggis Khaan” National Museum. Under the theme “Peaceful Mongolia — Pax Mongolica,” our country is presenting 28 valuable artifacts from the exhibits of the “Chinggis Khaan” National Museum to highlight the historical and cultural heritage of the Mongol Empire. In addition, the exhibition introduces contemporary Mongolian society, economic development, and tourism opportunities, as well as real actions taken toward achieving sustainable development goals. As part of a sub-theme, the “Go Mongolia” national brand is being prominently promoted. Using VR and AR technology, visitors can virtually explore ancient Kharkhorum city, participate in the Mongolian Naadam festival, and experience traditional Mongolian lifestyle and scenic natural destinations.

It is worth noting that the tradition of organizing the world’s largest international expos began in the mid-19th century. These expos serve as a platform for countries to showcase achievements in science, technology, architecture, and the arts. The first World Expo was held in London in 1851.

The first Expo that was held in Osaka took place in 1970. A large park was created for the event, and its main attraction was the 70-meter-high “Tower of the Sun.” At that time, the expo attracted 64 million visitors.

For this year’s “Osaka-Kansai EXPO 2025,” more than 28 million visitors from around the world are expected to attend and explore the exhibition.
